Hi, I’m Kelly Garcia! I am the new Wellness Correspondent for Spin Your Own Axis, LLC Nutrition, Health Promotion & Fitness Services & Education Platform

I am currently pursuing my Masters of Public Health and Epidemiology from George Mason University. I’m also a Graduate Research Assistant for a pediatric weight management program at Mason. My undergraduate education was in Nutrition studies. After I complete my Masters, I hope to pursue my Ph.D. in Social Epidemiology, centering my research on the social determinants of health that lead to food insecurity.

My philosophy on pursuing a healthy life began when I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 21. While I was in treatment, I learned the value of eating for symptom management. I am happy to say I am now in remission, and my passion for living a healthy life has gotten stronger.

I think that food should enhance your pursuit of a healthy life, not clutter it. To put it simply, my doctrine on healthy eating can be stated as: simple, balanced, and nourishing. Michael Pollan summed up my beliefs when he said, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

I also believe that food is only one part of the puzzle. To me, a healthy life is found through balance in diet, sleep, movement, nature, relationships, and education. I plan on touching on all of these topics for SYOA through research-supported articles and other content. Until then, I look forward to getting to know this community better!

Health Research Correspondent

Hi, I’m Daisy Posada! I am the new Health Research Correspondent for Spin Your Own Axis, LLC Nutrition, Health Promotion & Fitness Services & Education Platform

I earned my Master’s in Public Health, as well as my Bachelor’s in Biology, from George Mason University. I am currently a health research associate working on different projects exploring pediatric obesity treatment, and environmental child health outcomes. One of my favorite earlier experiences was spending some time working at a cancer center that integrated healing approaches that focused on physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

These experiences have all helped shape my interest in learning and promoting the importance and benefits of preventive health throughout our lives. It is also important to understand that “health” is defined by several components.  Rather than solely focusing on health treatment programs, I believe we should balance our efforts and place value in earlier, preventive measures before a health condition roots itself and progresses into its later stages. We can make changes to take a detour and avoid certain health conditions altogether,  rather than relying on treatment methods that may only have the capacity to alleviate or manage symptoms, but not eliminate it as a whole.

There is not always a one-size-fits all approach, but there is a wide array of pathways we can take to achieve this and live our healthiest lives, and I am excited to dive in and share knowledge that can help you find what works for YOU!

Wellness Correspondent

Hey Everyone,

I'm Evelyn Zavala! One of the two new Wellness Correspondent for Spin Your Own Axis, LLC Nutrition, Health Promotion & Fitness Services & Education Platform

A little bit about me - - I am Salvadorian, born and raised in Northern Virginia. I am a Graduate Research Assistant for a pediatric obesity study in Latinos.  I am wrapping up the first year of my master's in public health in Epidemiology at George Mason University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health Education from James Madison University, Go Dukes!

I LOVE food and fitness! While fitness was my first love, nutrition has become a recent interest of mine. In 2017, I took control of my health and began learning about what I put into my body and how my body responds to different foods.

I have slowly built my confidence around being a "good cook", learning to cook healthier meals, portion control, self-compassion, and balance. I think having a healthy relationship with food is very important for all goals, whether it is to lose, gain/build muscle, maintain weight or just live a healthy lifestyle.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" -Nelson Mandela. I share with you my favorite quote because I strongly believe with education, anything is possible. Education can be educating yourself, educating others, learning something new, showing up every day, or just believing in yourself.

I am excited to share research about health, nutrition, behavior change, and fitness while learning right alongside all of you, and ensuring you have the tools to live the healthiest lives you want to live!
