A peek inside a Pomegranate and its health benefits!

Updated: Jun 6, 2019

Pomegranate a favorite among many of us because of its berry like, vibrant and refreshing taste.

The delicious fruit alone carries health power packed preventative properties for many chronic diseases which is one of the main reasons it makes it to my favorite list.

In the past decade, numerous studies on pomegranate constituents have been published and accumulating data clearly claimed that Punica granatum L. (pomegranate) has several health benefits; it is a long-lived and drought-tolerant plant that can help prevent or treat various disease risk factors including:

  • high blood pressure

  • high cholesterol

  • oxidative stress

  • hyperglycemia

  • inflammatory activities

  • cancer (Zarfeshany et al., 2014, n.p.)

“It is demonstrated that certain components of pomegranate such as polyphenols [are micronutrients that we get through certain plant-based foods] have potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic effects”. (Zarfeshany et al., 2014, n.p.)

Prostate Cancer: Research has demonstrated that pomegranate juices have help prevent human prostate cancer because it could prevent cell growth and induce apoptosis [death of cells]. (Zarfeshany et al., 2014, n.p.)

Breast Cancer: In experimental studies, pomegranate seed oil has demonstrated time again that it can help prevent the rapid increase or reproduction of cells of different tumor type cells and reduce carcinogenesis in the mouse mammary organ. ( Bassiri-Jahromi, 2018. N.p.)

Blood Pressure: Blood pressure is the greatest contributor of Cardiovascular disease. (Stockton et al., 2017, N.p.)

A study found in the Journal of Nutritional Sciences investigated the effect of pomegranate extract on blood pressure. A total of fifty five participants enrolled in a randomized double blinded placebo controlled clinical trial where they were assigned either a pomegranate extract capsule or placebo capsule for 8 weeks. After the 8 weeks a significant decrease in diastolic (is the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats) blood pressure was seen compared to the systolic (pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle) blood pressure where no significant difference was absorbed.

(Stockton et al., 2017, N.p.)
